AR Sem 2 Project 2 : Disaster Shelter
Duration: 3 weeks
Title:
Create a shelter that fits human ergonomics, withstand weather, support human weight and self structure.
Obj:
To observe characteristics of different materials
To learn to use various kinds of equipment and machines
To learn human ergonomics
Before everything has started, lecturer showed us the slides of disaster shelters and basic concepts of human ergonomics. And next, we had a little short session of measuring our body height, and everything.
Then, proceeded to the idea development. My initial idea was ENCIRCLE, image formed like a poke ball, which is shown at the following pictures:
This was seriously a good ideaa, very differ from all classmatess, though the inspiration came from classmate's 1st project sculpture. I had even made measurement and every preparation for it. Bought aluminium strips, adhesive glues, bolts and nuts and else.
And then, the problem came. Aluminium strips was too soft to support my shelter! I even thought of using cane and rattan instead, but the price of the raw materials is seriously..unaffordable.
Therefore, I changed my initial concept of a sphere shelter into a hemisphere.
Within the period of concept development, we done research for existing disaster shelter. And this was my last minute board. Tsk tsk tsk.
Sketching using water colours. Hmmm
The uniqueness of the shelter is the shelter is done without any nails and bolts.
It is like a 3D puzzle to be set up easilyyy.
Lecturer asked us to do research after the idea development for a reason: which is not influenced by existing shelters so that we can design the shelters creatively.
The period of working was the toughest weeks. 2 weeks to work on it. Since I have mentioned that the strips are not able to support my model, I gonna think of changing lot of materials and experiments, this spent a lot of timeee. And at the end, Neal suggested me a way of doing the reinforce structure and design a jointing for the reinforcement metal.
And indeed I spent a lot of time to search for the right materials, the harder metal rod that can be bent, yet strong to withstant the self structuree. Toughest project toughest moment toughest weeks. I couldnt sleep well and eat well, everyday thinking of the shelter.
FYI, my main materials is aluminium and metals, therefore the timber workshop cannot be used and instead I had to use the campus mechanical workshop. Everyday carrying bunch of stuffs from and to the studio and mechanical workshop, losing weight like seriously. Some tasks which cannot be done alone, I managed to seek assistance from my Mao and Bear whee.
Few days before the presentation, I got stressed up like seriously and everyday stay up late to complete the works. Besides rivetting, and screwing the bolts and nuts, I gotta do sewing the canvas to be the covering of the shelter as well. Luckily Aisha lent us her sewing machine.
And thanks to herrr. My first time ever sewing contributed to this project.
1 night before presentation.
I completed my work at 11pm and I gonna rush home for presentation boards.
/.\
First project that stressed me up like emoing everyday. Worried whether the structure will collapse during midnight, it can support my weight or not, the canvas will torn off or not, what happen if it rains and everything...
My presentation board. If not mistaken I finished it at 330am. HOHOHO.

Presentation session:
It was another stressful session. Mr Tan was invited to crit our presentation. He asked sharp questionss and even claimed that some classmates had failed in the aspects of structure and ergonomics. Perhaps perhaps, I was the middle in the list, so the lecturer was bored and he did not ask too much sharp questions.
Or maybe, my own design jointing helped me in my marks. :D Thanks to Neal.
Afterall, I score A- for this project. Thanks a lot to Mr Ho, who taught me so much about the materials...At the very last minute, he suggested me to add in another reinforcement bars and timbers to support the structures. It spent me a few days to complete and I was damn nervous as that was the last few days before the presentation.
I had learnt so much in this project besides this toughen me so much...Fortunately there will not be such back breaking task after this...
I believed I can so I can. What about u?
